A DAY IN THE LIFE: A SURF JOURNALIST

LAST WEEK,  we announced our first sponsored rep for Malibu Surfboards, surf journalist and Malibu local, Shannon Quirk.   The day after her announcement, she jet-setted off to Maui to cover JAWS, a surf challenge event in Maui where big wave surfers ride some of the season's biggest waves, as part of the World Surf League's (WSL) Big Wave Tour.

We were beyond excited to hear about Shannon's next work adventure. We thought - why not have her take us behind-the-scenes, documenting a day in the life of her production work?  With much excitement, she did. Shannon took over our Instagram page [@MalibuSurfboards], taking us and our followers behind the scenes of a day in her rad life as a sports journalist.

Despite the WSL's announcement to call off the Pe'hai challenge, Shannon still covered some awesome footage. Take a look!

Welcome to Jaws! This was the first photo I shot as we reached the channel at Maui's infamous big-wave spot. There's nothing more humbling than staring into the eyes of the beast.

Post-production - a surf session is needed. Just a girl, her surfboard, and her favorite hoodie.

Monster swell of the winter, #Jaws peaked in size just before dark. We watched @danilocouto11 catch this bomb on his birthday, the best present a big-wave surfer could receive -- the ultimate ride, surrounded by good company.

So much adrenaline was pumping in our boat ride out to #Jaws #Peahi, with a great crew of big-wave chargers! @andreamollermaui @ejamestaylor

Be Wet. Be Active. Be Local.

#SURFSATURDAYS

Not sure where to go this weekend to jump-start some of your active and healthier New Year’s resolutions? We’ve compiled the TOP 5 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES to take advantage of in the ‘Bu. Whether you start this weekend, or the following, you can be sure to enjoy these year-round undertakings.

1.) Surf. If you don’t know already how to catch a wave, why not learn how to surf? The core-building sport is perfect to tone your body and connects you with the water like no other. Think of mediation meets thrill-seeking adventures on the water. Nothing is better than riding your first wave till the very end.

Recommended surf rental with awesome surf classes:

2.) Standup Paddleboarding (SUP). For many in southern California, SUP has become the favorite past time hobby. This core-building activity [as well] is smooth sailing once you balance yourself on the board. Paddle out far near the Malibu Pier, and maybe you’ll be lucky enough to be alongside a pod of dolphins.

3.) Hiking. If you don’t already know, along the Pacific Coast Highway, from Pt. Mugu to Malibu, the majestic Santa Monica Mountains are what separate the coastal lifestyle from city frills. With a plethora of trails to choose from, you can start your trek from beginner to advanced paths that will get your heart pumping and into a healthier you in no time.  Try: Zuma Ridge Trail Head - it's one of our favorites for a scenic hike.

4.) Bike riding.

Are you looking to tackle some major mountain biking? Even if you don't have the proper equipment to do so, you can surely rent a bike and enjoy some scenic routes in and around the Santa Monica Mountains. Saturday morning rides have become the popular destination for new riders and veterans, alike.

Recommended place to rent:

Topanga Creek Bicycles - Bike Rentals

1273 North Topanga Canyon Boulevard

5.) Juice cleanse. Ok – so this may not be an outdoor activity, per se, but healthier habits are also part of your everyday regimen. SunLife Organics, a locally-owned juice bar, has grown into one of the most popular spots in the area. With freshly made juices and infused smoothies, like our favorite, the Peanut Butter Chocolate - packed with tons of protein.  You'll be frequenting this go-to spot, even if you risk the chance of being stuck in traffic. www.sunlifeorganicsmalibu.com
